Why I stay away from trendy makeup

This is exactly why I stick with soft, natural, pretty makeup that enhances and doesn’t hide. I know these are buzz words nowadays but for me its always been my MO - for the last 20 years (yikes.) I remember once when I was on the set of Sex and The City, working as Kevyn Aucoin’s assistant, one of his model friends popped by the set. She had a job interview and needed her makeup done. Kevyn quickly banged out one of his super glamorous looks (I mean why woudnt’t he) and she skipped off to her interview. Not ten minutes later she returned and confided in me that it was too much. For 20 year old me, this was pretty shocking but I understood what she meant. It was a job interview, not a fashion shoot. She said “I like your makeup, can you redo what he did but don’t tell him.” I took her to a corner, wiped her makeup off, used my own makeup to give her a natural look and sent her happily on her way. This was a defining moment in my career and I inherently understood there was a market for my kind of makeup. Clean, simple, beautiful. I never want to change the way a women looks, as much as I wouldn’t want to change who she is.

I know Instagram and Pinterest and Tim Tok are rife with makeup that runs the gamut of soft and pretty to wild and intense. All are interesting and fun to look at. But very few translate to real life, especially an intimate event like a wedding. This is why I will always stay true to the kind of makeup I do and have done - because it never goes out of style. Natural makeup is timeless makeup, period.
